Oluf Pedersen Kofoed was married first to Margrethe Sigvardsdatter in
1608; secondly to Gjertrud Lauridsdatter in 1623. He had moved to
Ysted in the Danish province of Skåne, where he settled and
eventually became the Mayor; and where his son Sivert would also
become mayor. His other sons were Peder and Hans, although which of
the two women are their mother I do not have in my records, possibly
it is not known. They were the forefathers of a large branch of the
Kofoed family in southern Sverige/Sweden. Skåne (aka Scania) was a
Danish province for over 500 hundred years before it was lost in war
to the Swedes; handed over to Sverige/Sweden as a result of the
"Peace of Roskilde", signed in 1658. The old territory of Skåne now
comprises the counties (län) of Malmøhus and Christiansstad. In
Danmark, a person did not become a citizen by virtue of being born
there. Citizenship was a valuable privilege that included: the right
to engage in business in a community; rights and protections under
the law; permission to reside in a community without being expelled.
Citizenship was extended by individual communities to some of their
inhabitants, primarily those who wanted to engage in business, and
did not pertain to citizenship in the country as a whole. Until the
twentieth century, only males of the middle and upper classes, mostly
merchants and tradesmen, were granted citizenship.
Blev i sit tolvte År sat i en "skriffuer oc Regne skole" i Kolberg i
Pommern, og efter at han havde gennemgået denne, drev han handel og
købmandsskab. Var i 6 År rådmand i Rønne, og blev efter juli 1624
borgmester i Ysted. Han var ejer af 23. sgd. Kofodgård, Østermarie,
som han solgte til broderen Mads Kofoed. Skødet dateret 10/7 1630.
Begravet 28/2 1636 i Vor Frue Kirke i Ysted.
